Again, sorry if this is TMI! There's a little bit of graphic info.
My current birth control situation reminds me of PP every time I think of it because that's where I got it. I have a Mirena IUD that came highly recommended by one of my coolest lady-friends. I got it installed on Feb. 27, 2006, my birthday the year I was on Martha Stewart.
This is a bit of a humiliating story that I can now look back and laugh at- I was lying there having an intra-uterine device installed (graphic, I know, sorry,) and the nurse practitioner recognized me from my Martha Stewart news in the local paper. Grrrreat!
She was super nice and that gave us something to discuss and to distract from the business at hand.

I lived in North Carolina (while my boyfriend-now-husband) completed medical school. I used Planned Parenthood of Orange County in Chapel Hill, for all of my lady-business services for the 5 years I lived there. I sometimes had health insurance and was able to use that, but I also paid out of pocket on many occasions. I definitely paid out of pocket for my Mirena which was about $600 at the time. I was in a good financial place after my Martha show appearance from necklace sales- so it was easier to throw down Mirena cash at the time. I knew that my husband would be doing a 5-year medical residency (that's why we're in NYC) and I didn't want the voices in my head that tell me I want a baby to take over while he was, and still is, a resident.
So, for a few more months, until it expires, I'll be rocking my Mirena I got from Planned Parenthood, as it's good for five years.
This sounds funny, but I was always so happy to give them my business/money and now I'm really happy and proud to volunteer for them.

(Reminder: I am on the PPNYC Activist Council and it's one of the best things I've ever signed up for.)
And yes- I love the Mirena.
And I'm going to this on Monday night: Planned Parenthood's Summer, Sex & Spirits - Open bar and fellow supporters- I'm there.
Thank you so much for this post and the work you are doing. I would would love to post this on a facebook thread that really got me worked up yesterday!

And if you can deal with the increased bleeding (IME it's a major increase, no joke), the same cash will get you a Copper-T/Paragard IUD, good for at least babyfree ten years.
ReplyDeleteI've been reading your blog for a while (without commenting) because I'm a cute--I hope--lady bike commuter, too. But I just had to comment today to support this post. Planned Parenthood does such important work helping women stay healthy. It was there when I needed a "lady-business" :-) appointment right away and didn't want to wait weeks to see another doctor. Yay, Planned Parenthood!
ReplyDeleteI just want to say Thank YOU! As a Latina, Planned Parenthood has educated me on prevention during my college years and as a teacher in the public school system I hope they continue their work in educating young women.
ReplyDeleteAs a nurse, and friend of nurse's who work at PP, THANK YOU!
ReplyDeleteThank you for being a Planned Parenthood supporter. I've always considered myself lucky to have fairly reliable healthcare but plenty of women don't. I am on the pill to prevent pregnancy but mostly for other health reasons. Even w/ my insurance, the copay is pretty expensive. Planned Parenthood's services are a godsend to women who otherwise could not afford them due to lack of health insurance.
