When people ask me how I got started biking in New York City, I explain that I worked with a badass little Japanese lady who rides a bike pretty much every day. I thought to myself "If she can do it, so can I" and the rest is history.
I want ladies who are interested in biking in NYC to come and see me, and think that same thing themselves: If she can do it, so can I.
With that, I invite those interested to my bike month event:
So bring a brown bag of snacks or lunch and join me for some Lady Biker Sisterhood on May 20th at 2pm.
After being invited to the TA Bike Month planning meeting, I felt inspired to host my own little event. My event is engineered to be educational and I encourage ladies who do not yet bike, but want to get started biking in NYC to come. My event is a sit-down hang-out, not a ride. I wanted to have something not a ride, so ladies who are interested in becoming lady bikers can come and learn and socialize and not have to stress about not having a bike or whatever.
I never want to pressure anyone into riding a bike. But I love teaching my tips & tricks!
PS- I'll come up with a more specific location or a marker to denote how to find me, like pink balloons or signs or something. In case of rain, convene at Trailer Park Lounge. I'll send out some tweets #BrownBagBikeBrunch beforehand, so save the search if you're into that.
I want to stress that Bicycles are not required for this gathering.
I'd love to get RSVP's: Please email picnic@jphardee.com
I want to be able to gauge the size of grass we'll need to take over.

JULIEEE!
ReplyDeleteYou can bet I'll be there, even though ya know I already bike! I'd still love ta hear ya tips, and maybe even dish a few of my own. ;)
Plus, I love picnics, I love May, and I completely support anything #BikeNYC.
Let me know if I can do anything to help promote!
Cool, Juliekins!
Happy Monday!! :D
Good! I totally want experienced lady bikers to come, I just want to emphasize that people who aren't there yet should come and see.
DeleteI'll be so glad to see you!
Awwww, such a great idea and would have loved to meet you but I'm here in DC although hubby and I are doing the 5 Burroughs tour on May 6th. Maybe we'll see you there or some other time.
ReplyDeleteOoh, I *might* be doing 5 Boro so it's likely.
DeleteYou've inspired me, I'm totally going to do my own version of this in Boston!
ReplyDeleteYou should! Your invitation will be so much cuter than mine because you can illustrate that piece.
Deletei think it's very nice of you to think of the non-bikers as well. It can get very intimidating to the newbie.
ReplyDeleteHeck yeah. There are some hardcore bike people that totally intimidate and scare me. I feel so "juvenile" or something. I don't know what. But I know can be overwhelming.
DeleteI wish I was in NY =< Hmm, maybe someone in SD will do something similar! I wish you much luck with this, Julie =D
ReplyDeleteI love NYC and now I really, really wish I were there. but I'm also here in DC. Although, I don't commute to work (it's 29 miles one way), I could certainly use the tips and tricks. I've just gotten back into biking.
ReplyDeletePut it in my calendar! Hope I'm in town, although I might end up in Alabama for work that weekend. I hope I can convince my friend to come who I am totally trying to pressure into riding.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea! I can't wait to hear how it goes.
ReplyDeleteMe too!! It's an awesome idea!!
