My SPF Game is Tight

My dermatologist is an adorable little humming bird of a young woman and I really pissed her off. She was really mad at me, like, scolding me about the sun damage on my shoulders when she recently gave me a skin inspection. I know this is totally because I bike in tanks and tubes.   Tank top commutes have begun and I’ve got my sun-protection game together so she won’t be disappointed in me and I can save my lily white skin.

Tips from my adorable and well-trained dermatologist: SPF 30 at all times and reapply every 2 hours.
And anything labeled with “Sport” and “water proof” is BS and the FDA is probably going to ban companies from labeling products with those terms in the future, so don't bother.

My selection process: I basically went on drugstore.com and filtered highest-rated & price and I’ve been using these two for about a week and I wanted to share because I think I picked two winners.
Inspect them for yourself here:

Philosophy Shelter SPF 30 for Face (I don't think the tint is noticeable.)
Lubriderm Advanced Therapy SPF 30 Note: I do like to smell a little like sunscreen and I sometimes play the alligator in the Lubriderm commercials my skin is so dry.

  1. Julie, i utterly SWEAR by philosophy shelter... i'm in the military and have deployed a lot to the middle east in the last decade, and have always slathered shelter on my face religiously and it has completely paid off. wonderful stuff!!

  2. Hm. Interesting. My problem is when it is really humid, applying lotion even a couple of hours before riding my bike makes me sweat way more -- you know what I mean? It's kind of a greasy sweat where I can tell my skin isn't able to breathe. (Ew, I know.) So far I haven't found a lotion that is light enough/absorbent enough to avoid this, so I use a powder on my face and hope for the best with the rest of my body, but I know this isn't a good solution! Maybe I need to crowdsource this on my blog or twitter.

  3. Not trying to freak you out, but you might want to read a little bit about the difference between chemical sunscreens (potentially cancer-causing, which is like, WTF, since they're supposed to stop you from getting cancer) vs. physical protection (the sunscreen ingredient is zinc oxide or titatium dioxide). That being said, I need to get on my sunscreen game because I am ready for shorts and tank top biking season!

Here's one of many links/studies on popular sunscreens: http://www.aolnews.com/2010/05/24/study-many-sunscreens-may-be-accelerating-cancer/

  4. Awesome info. I'm using Keihl's Superfluid for face and Duane Reade generic baby sunscreen for everything else. I'm really happy with both - the baby sunscreen is dirt cheap, 50SPF and only has a teeny tiny sunscreen smell. The Superfluid is triple awesome with no smell, thin easy to spread consistency and it actually helps matte-ify my skin, but at fifty bones for a small bottle, well, I like it and would buy it again, but we're not married yet.

I'm totally trying out the Shelter stuff next.

    1. I should have gotten that Duane Reade baby SPF. I lingered there then went upstairs and got online. Dang. There will be a next time, so thanks for the tip.
